I have never tried yoga before, where do I start?
If you are new to yoga, or returning from a long period of absence, we recommend doing our Beginners Yoga Course. It offers excellent value and gives you a choice of different teachers and class days and times. Plus, you are guaranteed to be learning at the same pace as everyone else in the class.
I already practice yoga but am new to Momentum, do I need to start with the Beginners Yoga Course?
No, absolutely not! Take a read of the class styles we offer to make sure you can find a class(es) that suit your interest and your level of health and physical preference. Once you’ve decided, check our timetable for class times that fit your schedule and you are welcome to come along!
What do I need to do before my first class?
Once you’ve decided to come along to a class for the first time, complete our Registration Form that includes your health details, so that we are ready for you when you arrive. Or you can also complete this in-person at the studio.
There’s no need to book into our general classes, just come along up to 10 minutes before the class to have a chat to the teacher, discuss any questions or injuries, and get to know the studio. You’ll find we are a pretty friendly bunch at Momentum!
So you feel more at home and get the most out of your yoga experience with us, we’d also love you to read through our Class Tips and Etiquette before you come along for the first time. It is important that you do not eat a main meal for 1-2 hours before class.
If I have an injury or medical condition, is yoga okay for me?
Yes! The tremendous thing about yoga is that we can offer lots of modifications and props to support you to be comfortable and safe with a variety of injuries and medical conditions. However, you are always best to first consult your doctor or treating therapist/specialist and get their consent. If you have something in writing that outlines your restrictions or limitations, we are also happy to read that.
Remember that if you are returning to yoga after a period of absence or injury, try not to have any expectations because your body will probably not be at the same level of conditioning it once was. That’s not a problem though – bodies heal. It just means being patient with yourself and working with your body gently and steadily. In yoga, we always just start from wherever we are. Listen to your body, respect your limits, and let yourself rest at any time.
If I am pregnant, which class is best?
Pregnant women have special needs that are just not catered for in general yoga classes. Plus, you want to be part of a community of women where you can share your experiences. We provide a specialised six-week Pregnancy Yoga Course for all pregnant women, in any trimester, with or without previous yoga experience. After completion of the course, students can continue to attend the weekly class up until the birth of their baby.
Do I have to pre-book my place in a class?
We encourage you to pre-register for your classes via our Punchpass on-line booking system (up to seven days in advance) to secure your place.
If you choose to just come along on the day, no problem, we will do our best to accommodate you.
Do you provide yoga mats?
Yes, we provide mats, bolsters and all the equipment that you will need for your yoga or meditation class, free of charge. If you would prefer to bring your own yoga mat, meditation cushion or stool, you are welcome. We also sell yoga mats, bolsters and other gear in our studio shop.
What should I wear for yoga? Or for meditation?
Yoga and meditation is practised barefoot, so you will be required to take your shoes off at the door and carry them into the studio. Most yoga studios are shoe-free zones! If it is winter and you get cold feet, you are welcome to wear your socks inside.
For yoga, we suggest you wear semi-fitted clothes that enable you to move comfortably. Jeans are not recommended. Be mindful of wearing clothes that are baggy or long in the arms or legs, as this tends to get in the way of some yoga postures. Active wear, gym pants, shorts or leggings are all fine.
For meditation, we request that you do not wear ‘noisy’ jackets or stiff clothing that might disturb the other students if you need to move during the session.
Can I come along as a casual student? And do you have class passes?
Yes. All our classes can be attended on a casual, drop-in basis. Though the benefits of yoga are best received with regular, ongoing practice, and we encourage this!
Our Class Passes vary from one month to three months to six and twelve month memberships – and all offer you great value. Click here to see the range of Class passes and Memberships on offer.
Can I bring along my teenage son or daughter?
Our yoga and mediation classes are designed only for adults 18+, rather than teenagers who have different physical, mental and emotional developmental needs that we do not cater for. Other yoga studios may provide classes for teenagers, usually during school terms (as we have also done in other years, however the interest wains too much for us to sustain them). We recommend asking for classes for teenagers through your high school.
How many students in your classes?
We limit our class size to 20 students so that each person can receive personal assistance from the teacher. At times, you will find classes have lower numbers, and at the very least may have just a few students. Our policy is to always run a class, even if there is just one student – so you can relax, knowing you will always receive our teachings and enjoy the extra attention!
What facilities do you have?
We provide a change room for you to use either before or after class. We also have outside female and male toilets, however there are no showers. We have an internal kitchen that has drinking water. You’ll also find we provide a few other creature-comforts like tissues and bowls of fresh fruit.
What parking is available?
There is ample free parking in the carparks immediately in front of and behind the studio. Please don’t park in the bays immediately behind the studio building marked ‘Tenant Parking only’.
That should get you going! If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel welcome to contact us.
