Yin Yoga is based on an ancient Taoist philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine dating back to 800BC.
It is a holistic approach that seeks to harmonise between the yin-yang polarities of life - and of ourselves - between the unstable, hidden aspects
(yin) and the changing, moving and revealing apsects (yang).
A Yin Yoga Class
At Momentum, Yin Yoga classes offer a slow, static, floor-based practice (without flowing movements) that is open to all yoga students.
A typical class involves a combination of lying, seated or kneeling floor postures only, held for three to five minutes each, to lengthen, stretch
and open the thighs, hips, pelvis and lower spine. Holding each posture for this time allows more deeply-held (and hidden) body tension and
energy stagnation that accumulates over time, to be released.
The practice focuses on releasing through the connective tissues (ligaments, tendons and fascia) whereas yang forms of yoga such as vinyasa and hatha yoga, focus on muscle tissues (and building strength).
Yin is particularly good for those just starting out in yoga. There is no requirement to be experienced or advanced in yoga as Yin is about gently finding your edge, no matter how strong or flexible you may or may not be.
Yin Yoga is a guided, meditative practice that includes the use of supportive props, such as bolsters, blankets and blocks, to ensure students are comfortable and able to completely let go. It is an ideal practice that prepares the body and mind for longer periods sitting in meditation.
Yin for each season.
Each season, Yin practice can be applied to the unique natural elements and characteristics of summer, autumn, winter and spring. We work with the different meridians (or energy channels) within the body/mind (internal) to compliment the weather (external) - thus creating better natural alignment with universal energies.
When our energy flow is balanced through Yin Yoga, all functions and organs of the body benefit including our structural alignment, our posture and our flexibility.
