What is Coaching?
Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and/or professional potential, which is particularly relevant in today's fast-paced and complex world.
Is coaching the same as counselling or therapy?
No. Counselling is generally based on resolving issues by understanding what happened in the past. Coaching is almost exclusively future-based, by identifying the opportunities you have now to bring out your best and create a more desirable future.
Coaching involves conversation, self-reflection, creating solutions as well as taking action. If you're wanting someone just to talk things over with or vent, then coaching isn't for you. At Momentum, if we believe you would be better served by counselling or another healing modality we are comfortable to say so and can provide our recommendation.
Is coaching the same as training, consulting or mentoring?
No. Training, consulting and mentoring rely upon someone who has expertise and knowledge giving advice to someone who is considered to have less experience and knowledge. If you get told what to do or how to live, then it isn't coaching. Coaching considers the client to be the expert in their own life.
Coaches use processes and techniques to help the client become more self-aware, take self-responsibility, access their own wisdom and create their own pathway forwards. A coach is a facilitator and may share their perspective with a client, however the focus is on the client deciding what is best for them and living in accordance with their own values and truth.
Is coaching appropriate for me?
If you want to make changes, and you are ready to commit some of your time, energy and finances to it, then yes you will benefit from having a coach.
Coaching works best if you are open-minded, even if you don't know where to start. Coaching is a journey, not a quick-fix, so being patient and trusting in the coaching process unfolding as it needs to, is important.
Why do I need a coach?
As adults we often get to a point in life where we're unhappy, and we want to change yet we realise our own limitations in making changes. Working with your own coach makes the journey of change much easier.
Although we are resourceful and do our best to up-skill and help ourselves, we often find it hard to let-go of old habits and beliefs. Even though we know we need to change, finding steady momentum in our personal or working lives isn't easy. We get caught in cycles of feeling motivated, then stuck in self-doubt and frustration. And this doesn't have to be the case.
Having a coach brings fresh perspectives on challenges, enhances decision-making skills and helps you to more effectively accomplish your goals.
How do I choose a coach?
The success of coaching depends on there being a good rapport and mutual respect between coach-client. Here are a few things to bear in mind.
- Make sure you feel comfortable with a coach, as someone who listens to you completely, without judgment.
- A good coach will be emotionally-mature, have well-rounded life skills experience, understand human nature and the complexities of the change process.
- A good coach will engage in periods of being coached themselves and be committed to their own journey of self-growth.
- Coach-specific training and professional recognition is important. The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the professional association for credentialed coaches and accredited coach training. You can search for and verify coaches with them online.
Be prepared to speak with a few coaches and ask them questions about their coaching qualifications, coaching experience and how they work - be warned that there are many different types of coaches and not all are up to standard! Because coaching is a non-regulated profession, anyone can call themselves a 'coach' without any coaching-specific training. Also, more expensive coaching fees do not mean better coaching or bettter results. You should be able to access coaching services for a reasonable fee that does not break your budget.
What's unique about Natalie and how does she coach?
As a coach for over 8 years and a practitioner of yoga and meditation for over 10 years, I have a peaceful, grounded presence which enables me to focus entirely on you. My coaching approach is intuitive yet because of my human resource management background it is also objective and practical - whilst I love all my clients I really want you to gain as much from your coaching experience as possible so that you end-up not needing me!
I use HR principles, the Enneagram and techniques from NLP, wellness and somatic coaching which get people more in touch with their heart and body, as well as their head.
Where needed I ask direct or challenging questions and my experience allows me to do so in a way that keeps things light-hearted and inspires you to gently broaden your perspectives. I consider self-awareness (or mindfulness) to be the foundation for all of the work that I do and this emphasis often has life-changing and transformational benefits for my clients.
I have undergone extensive coach-specific training, coaching supervision and have been a member of the ICF since 2007 - click here to read my professional bio.
How will Natalie's coaching benefit me?
Regardless of your circumstances, personal interests or professional goals, the benefits you can expect from my coaching include:
- making quicker, deeper shifts in your thinking, feeling and behaving
- experiencing greater progress than if you were doing it alone
- knowing how to more readily access your inner peace, wisdom and strengths
- developing your self-awareness and confidence
- feeling understood and unconditionally supported
- enjoying more satisfying relationships
- reaching more of your inner and outer potential.
Coaching is a process that is founded on having what's called an 'appreciative approach' which means we focus on what's working, what's wanted and what's needed to get there.
A written Coaching Agreement is completed with all clients that outlines our mutual roles and responsibilities. We embark on your chosen coaching program with a series of one-on-one coaching sessions, that take place either in-person or via Skype or telephone. Initially we use assessments and questionnaires to establish your level of self-awareness, work out where you are at and where you would like to be, personally and professionally. We define some pecific goals and intentions that you would like to focus and work on.
In between sessions you carry out reflections and actions that we agree will be most helpful to you. Through your ongoing self-inquiry, learning and my role-modelling of proactive approaches, we talk through and put in place strategies to overcome any obstacles that arise. Using practical tools and developing effective ways to self-manage and is an important part of the coaching process. Clients have access to me via email and phone in between sessions.
How much does coaching cost and how can I pay?
At Momentum, we charge middle-of-the-road coaching fees on a program basis that are consistent with the coaching profession. We offer both up-front and payment plans and accept payments via cash, direct bank account transfer, EFTPOS and credit card.
